Secret Society

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Since my new roommate and I mainly communicate with each other via Twitter and/or at Ad2 meetings, I thought I would take it up a notch and blog about this cool website she shared with the world today.  It still doesn’t make me want to drink Sherry, but I love how the website is created.

Thanks @taryn00!

Animated Music Video for U2′s “I’ll Go Crazy If I Don’t Go Crazy Tonight”

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

Visually stunning, this is a great example of how to story-tell.

From BoingBoing:

Animator David O’Reilly (Twitter) [...] has created this lovely music video for a little-known band from Ireland called “You Too.” What’s that? Oh I’ve been corrected, “U2.” I think this great little video will really help them get somewhere and make a name for themselves!

A little bribe never hurt anyone…Until you tweet

Friday, July 17th, 2009

Ran across a tweet that intrigued me enough to click on it, yes that happens a few times, and it opened up a can of worms that I just had to dig into…

The tweet I got was: iwearyourshirt I like @woot 10x more after reading this blog post about getting their ad $ http://tr.im/sOkz

I cracked up hysterically and realized if I ever want a client, I’m going to need to know their downfall whether it be chocolate, Lakers tickets, pizza or Manolo Blahniks. Just in case there’s a tie between someone else’s proposal and mine…I’ll have the shoe in with my bribe (which I will call ‘a gift out of kindness’ publicly).

It seems that ad exec Mike Wolfsohn exposed in his blog how business gets done in the ad game: with bribes of junk food and booze.  Wolfsohn entered a proposal for Zappos and when they weren’t picked he started to look into things. It seems that Zappos decided to thank all the agencies who entered their proposals and especially thank the ones that brought them pizza, ice cream, etc. Let’s just say Wolfsohn wasn’t too happy about the way things were done: read here. Now you should also read Woot’s response to Wolfsohn’s blog..too funny.

Woot blogged about the “16 Things To Send Woot If You Want Our Advertising Business“.
My favorites included:
2. One of those potatoes that looks like a U.S. president.
10. An analysis of the optimal direction to direct our divisional synergies towards future implementations achieving corporate-wide value-adds. Oh, and some more napkins.
And  in reference to what started the entire purpose of the blog: 16. An angry blog post publicly calling us out for ignoring your dumb proposal.

What is Your Work Worth?

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

Jeff Gardner in an article from smashigmagazine.com writes:

I’m about to make a bold statement. The quality of a design and the monetary cost of producing or procuring that design have absolutely no relationship whatsoever. It’s a bitter pill to swallow, I know. Many of you are crying foul at this very moment, but hear me out. I’ll explain my radical position – and hopefully give you a few pointers about how to more effectively price and position your design business in this brave new, and uncorrelated, world.

Jeff goes on to outline a few guideline for pricing your work and a few tips on your approach, as well as a few assumptions we make, like this:

Good design is about attitude

A little attitude and a little cockiness never hurt anyone. I would argue that those two qualities have actually helped more businesses than they’ve harmed. Why? Because being confident in your product or service is infectious. If you believe strongly in the value and the worth of what you’re selling, your clients are going see that – and respond in kind.

This is a great read for freelancers getting started and those of you who are looking for work and are filling your off hours looking for extra jobs but you don’t really know what to charge. The article is geared towards web designers, but the trends and truths are appropriate for any creative job.

One of the biggest hurdles I had to face as I started working for myself was juggling between taking what I could get and positioning myself in such a way where I could dictate, with pride and honesty, a price for what I do for my potential clients that would not only keep me in business but keep me respectable. It’s a decision I didn’t make overnight and it’s something I re-approach regularly.
